Knowing How to Act
Even when the clues become impossible to ignore, a parent is hard-pressed to know how to act. The natural instinct to crack down and forbid the girl from seeing the boy may be counterproductive, warns psychologist Jill Murray, author of But I Love Him, a book about dating violence. "You can't control her out of the relationship," maintains Murray. "You can send her to boarding school, give him a one-way ticket to Siberia, but then you just become another controlling person in her life."
